Alvaro Catalán de Ocón arrived in Gurunsi with the idea of bringing to life the concept of an expansive lamp. The pieces created by the Aboriginal community in Ramingining were the starting point.
The Frafra tapestry provided an organic structure through interconnected circles that is maintained in the lamp. However, unlike the thought-provoking tapestry, the lamp had to meet technical requirements. To this end, the design team defined a model of the Frafra family compounds with local artisans. While the tapestries reproduce the blueprint of existing buildings, the PET Lamp Gurunsi takes inspiration from the same architecture plans to create abstractions with multiple light points, designed to be suspended from a ceiling. Circles are organized around functional cores marked by reused PET bottles, permitting a 110v/220v electrical installation.
The large format of the PET Lamp Gurunsi transforms any space it encounters. As light transverses the openings of the weave, an entertaining, yet subtle play on shadows is produced, maintaining the essence of the images of Frafra Family Compounds.
